What Makes a Successful Experiential Pop-Up?

How do you create a pop-up that people don’t just walk past, but actively choose to visit, experience and share?

A successful experiential pop-up needs more than eye-catching design. It needs a strong creative idea, the right location and an experience that gives people a genuine reason to engage with the brand.

For Habitat, Highjam created The Very Very Nice List Pop Up in Seven Dials, London – a festive destination designed to showcase the brand’s top 25 hosting must-haves and encourage social sharing.

From location sourcing and design and build through to event staffing and free and bookable experiences, Highjam led the delivery of the pop-up from start to finish.

At the heart of the experience was an oversized advent calendar wall, bringing Habitat’s festive product range to life with a visual centrepiece designed to stop people in their tracks.

So, what makes an experiential pop-up successful – and how can brands turn a temporary space into a memorable brand experience?

  1. Create a concept people want to experience

The strongest pop-ups give consumers a reason to do more than look.

For Habitat, the Very Very Nice List transformed a collection of festive hosting products into an immersive, seasonal experience. The oversized advent calendar wall provided the wow factor, making the product story tangible and giving visitors something distinctive to discover.

A strong creative concept should connect directly to the brand while offering something unexpected.

Whether it’s an oversized installation, interactive display, product demonstration or immersive environment, the objective is to create an experience that people remember.

The best pop-ups don’t just display a brand. They bring it to life.

  1. Choose the right location

Even the strongest concept needs the right environment to succeed.

For Habitat, Highjam sourced a site in Seven Dials, a busy central London destination that provided an opportunity to put the experience in front of consumers.

When planning a pop-up activation, location selection should consider:

  • Target audience and footfall
  • Visibility and accessibility
  • Brand suitability
  • Available space and production requirements
  • Opportunities to attract and engage visitors

The busiest location isn’t necessarily the best. It’s about finding the right environment for the audience, campaign objectives and experience.

  1. Give people a reason to stop and participate

A visually impressive pop-up can attract attention, but interaction gives people a reason to stay.

Habitat’s Very Very Nice List included free and bookable experiences, creating opportunities for visitors to engage with the brand rather than simply browse the space.

Depending on the campaign, interactive elements could include product demonstrations, workshops, competitions, personalisation, sampling or bookable experiences.

The important thing is that each element serves a purpose.

Attract → Explore → Participate → Remember

A well-planned consumer journey makes the experience feel natural, while helping the brand create more meaningful interactions with its audience.

  1. Design for social sharing

If the objective is to generate social engagement, shareability needs to be considered from the beginning.

Adding a hashtag to a wall isn’t enough. The experience needs to give people something they genuinely want to photograph, film or share.

For Habitat, the oversized advent calendar wall provided a distinctive visual centrepiece, helping turn the festive product story into an experience people could engage with in person and online.

Other ways to encourage sharing include:

  • Visually striking installations
  • Branded photo opportunities
  • Interactive experiences
  • Unexpected moments
  • Personalisation and exclusive experiences

Every share creates an opportunity for the brand to reach beyond the people physically attending the pop-up.

Live experience → Social content → Wider brand awareness

The aim isn’t simply to ask people to post. It’s to create something worth posting about.

  1. Get the delivery right behind the scenes

A successful pop-up might look effortless to visitors, but delivering it requires careful planning and coordination.

Highjam was the lead agency for Habitat’s Very Very Nice List Pop Up, managing the experience from design and build through to event staffing and the delivery of all free and bookable experiences.

This joined-up approach helps ensure the creative concept translates into a practical, well-managed live experience.

From sourcing the venue and coordinating production to managing staffing and visitor experiences, every element needs to work together.

Because even the best creative idea needs excellent execution to make an impact.

Experiential Pop-Up FAQs

What makes a successful experiential pop-up?

A successful experiential pop-up combines a clear objective, the right location, a strong creative concept, interactive experiences and effective delivery. The best pop-ups give consumers a genuine reason to visit, engage and remember the brand.

How can a pop-up encourage social media sharing?

Visually distinctive installations, interactive experiences, photo opportunities and unexpected moments can encourage visitors to create and share content. Social sharing should be built into the creative concept from the outset.

Where can you run an experiential pop-up?

Experiential pop-ups can take place in shopping centres, high streets, retail spaces, event venues and exhibitions. The right location depends on the target audience, campaign objectives and budget.

Can an experiential pop-up help build brand awareness?

Yes. Pop-ups create opportunities for face-to-face engagement, product discovery and memorable brand experiences. Social content can also extend the campaign’s reach beyond the physical location.

Can Highjam manage the full pop-up experience?

Highjam can support the delivery of experiential pop-ups, including location sourcing, design, production, build, event staffing and live experiences.
