Christmas In-Store Demonstrations: Catch Shoppers at the Moment They’re Ready to Buy

Christmas shopping rarely goes quite to plan.
We all start with good intentions. Lists are made. Budgets are set. Someone says, “I’m going to have everything bought by November this year.” And then December arrives.

Suddenly shoppers are walking through stores trying to find the right present for a partner, parent, teenager, colleague or Secret Santa. They’re surrounded by choice, short on time and asking themselves:
Will they actually like this?
Is it worth the money?
Which one should I choose?
What does it actually do?

And this is exactly why the in-store moment matters so much at Christmas.

According to Mintel’s UK Christmas Gift Buying Market Report 2026, nearly half of UK gift buyers find gifting inspiration in stores. Mintel also found that one in four shoppers waited until December to begin their Christmas shopping in 2025. Mintel Store

So although Christmas marketing may start months earlier, a huge number of purchasing decisions are still being influenced right there in the retail environment, at point of purchase.

That creates an incredibly valuable opportunity for brands. A great in-store product demonstration, sampling experience or Brand Ambassador interaction can catch a consumer while they are actively looking for inspiration, ready to spend money and able to purchase immediately.

See it → Try it → Understand it → Buy it

That is what makes Christmas in-store activation such a powerful part of a retail marketing campaign. As the Christmas shopper is already halfway to purchase. Retail activations give brands something many other marketing environments cannot.

Purchase Intent is already there.

The consumer has made the effort to visit the store. They are browsing products. They are looking for ideas. They have money allocated to Christmas.
But they may not have decided which brand will get that spend.

Mintel’s finding that nearly half of gift buyers use stores for gifting inspiration is particularly important here. The shopper may walk into a store knowing who they need to buy for, but still be very open to influence around what they actually buy. Mintel Store

That makes the shop floor a critical point in the consumer journey. A knowledgeable Brand Ambassador can interrupt that decision-making process at exactly the right moment:
“Not sure what to get?”
“Let me show you this.”
“Try it.”
“Here’s why it makes a great gift.”
Within minutes, consideration can become purchase. And if your brand isn’t there influencing that decision, there is every chance a competitor will be.

Make the most of the critical Christmas sales window
Christmas isn’t one single shopping moment. Consumer behaviour changes dramatically across Q4.

Mintel found that 72% of shoppers bought Christmas gifts during Black Friday promotions in 2025, firmly establishing November as an important period for Christmas purchasing. At the same time, one in four still waited until December to begin shopping. Mintel Store

For brands, that means there are several key opportunities to influence shoppers:

Black Friday → November paydays → December weekends → peak Christmas trading → final gifting days → Boxing Day → January sales

The answer isn’t necessarily to activate every day.
It is to understand which stores, dates, times and consumers are most valuable to your brand and concentrate investment there.

How we maximised Christmas retail for Buyagift
For Buyagift, Q4 was a critical sales period. Their consumers were actively shopping for presents and the opportunity was to put the brand directly in front of them at the point of purchase, when they were already looking for gifting inspiration and ready to spend money.

We delivered a nationwide in-store programme across key retailers such as John Lewis, concentrating activity around the locations and trading periods where it could have the greatest impact.

Across Q4 we delivered:
900+ store days
100,000+ quality consumer interactions
Nationwide coverage across key John Lewis stores

But the scale of the programme was only part of the story. We continually evaluated the campaign throughout Q4:
• Which stores were generating the strongest results?
• Which days of the week worked hardest?
• What times of day produced the best engagement?
• Which sales techniques were most effective?
• Which consumer conversations were converting?
• Where should we increase or reduce resource?

Those learnings helped us continually refine the programme and focus investment where it had the greatest opportunity to deliver a return. Because successful retail activation isn’t simply about being in-store. View the case study here.

It’s about being in the right store, at the right time, with the right people and the right message.
